How can this be allowed?

How can the Society of St Pius X be "excommunicated" and treated so negatively by Catholics and yet Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini is not excommunicated and defrocked for the scandal he brings on the church with comments such as those quoted in this article? Our church is in a crisis, and I hope that Pope Benedict is up to the job of fixing the problems in our church.
