Immediate Action Required

I recently was emailed regarding an impending execution in Maryland. Being opposed to the "death penalty", I wanted to pass this along. Today I let the Bishops do the writing for me.

Contact Governor Ehrlich

Monday evening, November 28, following a prayerful visit with death-row inmate Wesley Baker, Baltimore Cardinal William H. Keeler released a letter sent earlier in the day to Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. Baker is scheduled to die by lethal injection sometime during the week of December 5th for the 1991 murder of Mrs. Jane Tyson. Cardinal Keeler spoke with Mrs. Tyson’s husband and one of her daughters prior his visit with Baker.

Co-signed by Washington Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick and Wilmington Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli, the letter urges the governor to spare Baker’s life. “[N]o decision of your gubernatorial service can be more momentous than the decision to extend, or to withhold the hand of mercy,” the prelates said in their letter.

The letter’s full content, including references to Holy Scripture and Church teaching, is available on the Maryland Catholic Conference’s web site, at www.mdcathcon.org.
